JOHN JAMES AUDUBON (1785-1851)

LITHOGRAPH ON PAPER, 6.5 inches X 10.25 inches (Sight)

Very Good to Excellent condition with no defects to report. As usual, one edge

is slightly uneven from being removed from the binding.

This is an original hand-colored print - #86 - from the royal octavo first edition of John

James Audubons Birds of America, published 1840-1844.

Lithographed, printed, and colored by J.T. Bowen, Philadelphia, 1840-44.

The first octavo edition was produced under the direct supervision of JohnJames

Audubon and features strictly hand-coloring.

The credits are in BLOCK LETTERS,as required for royal octavos numbered 1-150.

Includes a facsimile of the title page and a Xerox of the bird biography.

This unique image appears only in the octavo edition and is not in Havell nor Bien. It was

created by combining one bird from Havell #48 with one bird from Havell #49, and is believed

to have been redrawn by J.J. Audubon himself. Audubonrecognized that he had made some mistakes in

identification of yellow warblers in the Havelldouble elephant folio. He had incorrectly described the

young male cerulean warbler as a new speciescalled the Blue-green Warbler. He corrected the mistake in this

octavo print. Ron Tyler documents a "change in style" apparent in the few extant original drawings

now in the Hill Memorial Library at LSU, and lists Bowen plate 86 as perhaps redrawn by Audubon himself.

Audubon called this edition his "small work" and this nearly lifesize print is one of its triumphs in that the

small birds did not have to be reduced as much as the large ones, andwere "giventhe size ofnature."

Comes in a plastic protector, and will be sandwiched between wider foam boards for mailing.

Buyer to pay $8 Priority Mail shipping within U.S. International shipments made at $18 via Priority Intl.
