DESCRIPTION

An early edition of this work, rebound in a quarter cloth binding with renewed end papers.

William Cobbett (1763-1835), among others, sought to reform Parliament, with the goal of easing poverty among farm labourers and small land holders. His Political Register became the main newspaper read by the working class. He greatly influenced his readers, proposing that their sufferings could be remedied by parliamentary reform. In March 1817, Cobbett became aware that the government planned to arrest him for sedition. He wrote this address, first published in Cobbetts Weekly Political Register, before fleeing to America, where he remained for the following two years. This is a very scarce work, giving fascinating insights into political activism in early 19th century Britain.
