DESCRIPTION
Walter Shaw Sparrow was a notable Welsh writer on art and architecture with a special interest in British sporting artists.
This edition, printed on specially made rag paper, with two extra plates in hand-coloured photogravure is limited to one hundred and twenty five copies, of which this is no. 21.
Copiously illustrated throughout with seventeen coloured plates (including two extra illustrated plates to the introduction) and numerous monochromatic plates. This copy also features a folding plate of the Alken Family Tree.
A Book of Sporting Painters acts as a companion work to Sparrows earlier works British Sporting Artists From Barlow to Herring and Angling in British Art Through Five Centuries. This work also includes references to a variety of artists, including the noted artist George Stubbs, best known for his work on horses.
CONDITION
In a full cloth binding with gilt detail to the spine. Externally slightly bumped to extremities and head and tail of spine. Red ink marking to front board. Tidemark to boards, more severe to rear. Rear hinge partially split and strained, but firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean throughout, very slight age toned to edges. Small ink mark to gutter of printed dedication page, offset to facing page.
