- August29, 1878:"the following commentary by Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, with specificreference to Tho. Webb and Sons Bronze Glass appeared. On a recent visit toMr Goodes attractive galleries at Audley Street, we noticed a fine selectionof the new Bronze Glass, discovered and made by Messrs. Thomas Webb and Sons,of Stourbridge. Its purple bronze surface shines with the hues of the rainbow, such as they appear on molten lead, or on pieces of steel which have beentempered in gradually diminishing degrees of heat.......The shapes are inpreference borrowed from Dr Schliemanns finds at Troy and Mycenae, owl facedand curiously lipped vessels predominating....It has already attractedconsiderable attention at the Paris Exhibition."

In 1877, T. Webb introduced Bronze glass. The patent was applied for on August 29, 1877and granted on February 27, 1878. Bronze glass was a form of iridescentfinish made to compete with Bohemian products of that time. Thistreatment was to mimic Roman and other ancient glass, being excavated at thetime, which had a natural iridescence due to soil contact. Bronze glassis a close cousin to the later mass produced American carnival glass. Itis produced by exposure of the glass in a semi-molten state to fumes ofchloride of tin, alone or mixed, with the nitrates of barium andstrontium.
